#RESPECTYOUANDME is initiative started by redcross.ca, which aims to educate students about healthy relationships. Their approach teaches others about appropriate ways of communication and behavior in relationships. They teach others about embracing your own self and acting with respect.
What can you learn?
- The Language of Consent
Learning the right words to communicate how you feel is important. Consent sounds like “Yes, I like this and I am comfortable with this”. If something doesn’t feel right, an assertive statement sounds like “I want you to stop”.
- Supporting One Another is Important
Letting others know that you are there for them is important. Therefore, having the knowledge and standing together can make a big impact in anybody’s life. #RESPECTYOUANDME teaches about the importance of telling those that you trust what is going on in your life.
- The Feeling of Being Safe
This initiative shows others what it feels like to be safe, and thus what we can do as allies to create an environment of safety.
- Respecting Online Privacy
Sharing images online has become a very common practice. However, not many students are able to share images in safe, ethical ways. Students learn that showing others private images causes hurt and is a violation of privacy.
- The Importance of Boundaries
It is important to know how to respond to situations that you may not be ready to answer at a present moment. Students learn about delegating time to themselves, family, and friends. Furthermore, students become assertive by learning how to get out of feeling trapped.
- Taking Responsibility and being a Leader
Students gain confidence in taking action in events and choices in their lives. Also, the importance of acknowledging one’s mistakes and short-comings is emphasized.
#RESPECTYOUANDME is a wonderful approach to offering students the self-efficacy skills they need to be confident, strong leaders and members of society.
